Expertises

Synthesis and characterization of drug delivery systems containing cytostatics mainly in the form of nanoparticles (liposomes and gold nanoparticles); cell culture work - primary and cell line based; visualization of nanoparticles and cells using a variety of microscope techniques such as AFM, TEM, SEM and confocal; organic synthesis of small molecules as well as solid phase synthesis of peptides.

Main research areas

Development of HPLC methods for the quantification of e.g. vitamins, catecholamines and pharmaceutical compounds in biological matrix (serum/plasma); characterization of primary cells.

Current research

Characterization of primary human trabecular osteoblasts (ThoB). In order to validate our protocols it is important to know the special characteristic of this cell type. We speculate that the expression of e.g. surface receptors change with passage number of the cells. To study this we look into cell proliferation, cell maturation as well as matrix mineralization. One characteristic feature of these mature cells is their ability to express bone-specific alkaline phosphate important for the bone mineralization process. To look for specific expression of genes and proteins we use qPCR and Western blotting.
