The objective of this project is to investigate if glutamatergic disturbances can be regarded as endophenotypic markers for schizophrenia. More specific, the focus will be to investigate the interplay between genetic and environmental factors on the glutamate system. By comparing investigations in monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs discordant for schizophrenia and healthy control subjects. We want to investigate disturbances in the glutamatergic neurotransmission of patients with schizophrenia, by usage of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS), a sub-category of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in the twin cohort.
Based on the available literature we expect to find significant disturbances in the glutamatergic system of patients with schizophrenia. We hypothesize to find significant glutamatergic disturbances in the probands compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, we expect glutamatergic disturbances to also be found in unaffected co-twins, although not to the same extend as in probands, when compared to healthy controls.
