Fluispotter - Clinical validation of a new innovative device for wearable automated 24-hour blood sampling

The current research project deals with Fluispotter – a wearable device for automated sampling invented by the company Fluisense. The device is attached to the patient’s arm, from where it samples for up to 24 hours, with as much as 20 dried blood spot samples. As it weighs less than 75 grams, it allows complete patient mobility.

The overall aim of the project is to validate this innovative method for serial blood sampling. By conducting 24-hour measurements with 20 blood samples, the consortium expects to obtain more accurate data with high reproducibility,
compared to current diagnostic procedures. In addition, procedures become more cost-efficient and allows for blood sampling in situations where serial sampling might otherwise avoided by the doctor for the fear of discomfort – e.g. cases of small children.

The Dept. of Endocrinology (Rigshospitalet) and Dept. of Paediatrics (Herlev Hospital) conduct clinical trials focusing on the hormone cortisol. In the trials, DBS is collected by Fluispotter and compared with existing methods for determining the level of cortisol in the blood. Dept. of Clinical Biochemistry (Rigshospitalet)
develops and validates the specific biochemical assays for measuring cortisol.
