Abstract

Background: Binge eating disorder (BED) has recently been recognized as a diagnosis in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders). BED
is a severe eating disorder with physical, social and psychological consequences. The prevalence of BED is 2-3% and the majority develop weight
problems and obesity.
Treatment is found effective in reducing eating disorder symptomatology, but rarely leads to weight loss. It is still unknown how the issue of obesity
can be addressed in BED treatment without increasing the risk of binge eating relapse.
Objectives: The study is an explorative investigation of the outcome of a newly developed group based treatment that combines psychotherapy and
either weight loss or well-being components for patients with binge eating disorders and obesity.
Methods: The study uses a convergent mixed methods design. Qualitative and quantitative data are gathered using in-depth interviews and self-report
measures in a pre-post naturalistic design. An integrating analysis of data from the qualitative and quantitative study will occur through cycles
of data analysis to produce a detailed picture of treatment effects and patient needs.
Results: The design of the study and preliminary results will be presented.
