Abstract

The perioperative management of pediatric surgical patients shares similarities with adult anesthesia but involves unique challenges. In children, we pay particular attention to the triad including preoperative anxiety, postoperative pain, and emergence agitation. In this chapter, we will explore how melatonin’s anxiolytic, analgesic, and sedative properties can bring it into play as a safe adjunct in perioperative care, and how it can complement existing pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions.
