Abstract
In this case report, we describe a 49-year-old man who, after treatment with sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim developed severe respiratory insufficiency, resulting in the need for veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. As an infectious cause was initially suspected, he underwent extensive testing and imaging before this diagnosis was reached. After cessation of treatment with sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, he slowly recovered his respiratory function and was discharged after one month of mechanical ventilation.
