Skin problems in diabetes skin problems caused by diabetes devices

Abstract

The use of diabetes devices are increasing, and both use of glucose sensors and insulin pumps are dependent on continuous wear of the device on the skin consequently resulting in continuous wear of patches 24/7. Unfortunately the wearing of devices are causing skin problems like contact dermatitis, wounds, scars and other more subcutaneous reactions. The research area is still new but still some evidence and knowledge base on causes, prevention and treatment of skin problems exist, hereby putting the clinical awareness of skin problems as the first and major step to overcome skin problems. Besides clinical evidence also a lot of different solutions and tricks on how to overcome skin problems are known, although especially long‐term consequences of both skin problems and the continuously use of topical corticosteroids or other more potent drugs are still to be investigated. At least many easy and cheap preventive approaches are available, but still especially the contact dermatitis no real great preventive tecniques exist, also shedding light on the design of diabetes devices, where recommendations of more skin‐friendly products are needed.
