Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Effective cross-sector collaboration between mental health centres and municipalities is crucial for integrated mental health care. Challenges such as fragmented communication and misaligned goals often impede these efforts. This study explores healthcare professionals' perspectives on these challenges and examines the role of relational coordination in enhancing collaboration.
METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted using focus group interviews with 21 healthcare professionals including nurses, occupational therapists, peer workers and social workers at a major mental health centre in Region Zealand, Denmark. Data were analysed using a hermeneutic approach guided by Jody Hoffer Gittell's relational coordination theory, which emphasises shared goals, shared knowledge, mutual respect and effective communication.
RESULTS: The study identified significant challenges in cross-sector collaboration, primarily due to poor communication and lack of shared goals between mental health centres and municipalities. These issues led to fragmented care and frequent readmissions. While mutual respect and a person-centered approach were valued, persistent gaps in shared knowledge and role understanding hindered effective collaboration.
DISCUSSION: Enhancing communication, aligning goals and strengthening relational coordination are critical for improving cross-sector collaboration. Addressing these challenges requires targeted interventions such as systematic communication protocols, regular interdisciplinary meetings and clearer role definitions, supported by policy initiatives.
CONCLUSION: Improving relational coordination between mental health centres and municipalities is essential for providing integrated, continuous mental health care. Focusing on shared goals, mutual respect and effective communication can enhance collaboration and lead to better patient outcomes.
