Current research

My current research focuses on four main areas:

1) Translational bone biology, which includes projects involving basic and translational studies (in vitro and in vivo) to elucidate the role of purinergic signaling in the regulation of bone turnover/metabolism.

2) The effects of loading/unloading of bone. This includes in vitro studies on the effects of fluid flow/other types of loading on the activity of bone cells, in vivo studies where the mechanisms underlying the anabolic actions of loading on bone are studied, and finally clinical studies to evaluate the effects of physical activity/loading/unloading on the skeleton under different disease conditions.

3) Studies in which we evaluate the usefulness of bone turnover markers as predictors of fracture risk, effect of bone-active treatments etc.

4) The role of purinergic P2 receptors in disease development and as potential drug targets: Cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis.
