Expertises

I have during the last eight years as Head of Laboratory for Molecular Cardiology (LMC), Department of Cardiology, Rigshospitalet  gained extensive experience with genetic screening and with implementation of front-line technologies such as “Next Generation Sequencing” at Laboratory for Molecular Cardiology. The first challenge in this process was to develop a plan and implement the equipment for DNA purification, DNA quality check and the equipment that generates the DNA sequencing data. The second challenge was to establish the bioinformatics pipeline for the analyses and storage of the huge amount of data that we are generating nowadays. I have in that process established a strong and fruitful collaboration with DTUs System Biology and we are now running all analyses on our own accord on DTUs extremely powerful supercomputer located at Risø.

Main research areas

I have since 2007 conducted research in the area of genetic causes of arrhythmias, with a special focus on heritable changes in ion channels. My research has focused on a group of highly selected patients with early onset lone atrial fibrillation (AF).

Current research

The overall objective of my research is to provide and disseminate new knowledge regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying genetic causes of AF by genetic screening of lone AF patients and families with accumulation of AF from the entire country.. During my years as head of LMC I have gained extensive experience with supervision of PhD students and research year student. Most of this research has been conducted in close collaboration with clinical cardiologists and basic scientists.
