Main research areas

Atrial fibrillation (AFIB) associated to a temporary cause, as infection or surgery, is considered a benign condition. There is no current evidence that supports this notion, which we try to elucidate; and we try to explore the mechanisms behind vascular insulin resistance

Current research

In LAACS (2010-2016) we randomised 185 patients (142 per protocol), to additional closure of the left atrium appendage in addition to planned open heart surgery or control. Preliminary results show that this can prevent brain damage in the years following surgery, since in most patients AFIB recurs. In SECAFIB we study the risk for AFIB recurrence after onset associated to a temporary condition, retrospectively (10-years follow-up until 2016), and in an upcoming prospective study; Studies on the human forearm vascular studies explore the influence of oxidative stress in vascular ageing, in healthy humans, and whether oxidative stress can be modified during acute coronary syndrome, to prevent vascular dysfunction.
