She is the founder of the Nordic Society of Medical Mycology (NSMM) and has been president 2003 til 2013. She is chair of the EUCAST Antifungal Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee Steering Committee, head of the EUCAST Development Laboratory for fungi, and an editor for Drug Resistance Updates.

Prof Arendrup has authored more than 160 publications in international journals and as book chapters. She has received two research awards (Fritz Kauffman’s reward in 2003 and The Danish Society for Clinical Microbiology’s research award in 2010).

Main research areas

Epidemiology of invasive and superficial fungal infection, susceptibility testing and resistance development and mechanisms, breakpoint development, diagnostics and management of fungal infections.

Current research

Current research focus on epidemiology of invasive Candida and Aspergillus infections, including species distribution and susceptibility, risk factors, management and outcome; antifungal stewardship programmes in patients with critical or haematologic underlying disease, optimised diagnostics including real-time aspergillus PCR with simultaneous detection of azole resistance markers, in vitro testing and breakpoint development of new antifungals, use of the Galleria mellonella larvae model as an in vivo model for fungal virulence and treatment efficacy and development of an HPLC detection system for simultaneous detection of licensed mould active azoles.
