Current research

In Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), as the glomerulare filtration rate decreases, patients develop hyperphosphatemia. This PhD project is focusing on dietary intervention in order to control the disturbances the phosphorus homeostasis. The project is a partnership between the Department of Nephrology, University Hospital of Copenhagen, Rigshospitalet and the Department of Nutrition and Sports, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen.

This work consists of three parts with one main hypothesis:

Renal New Nordic Diet reduces the 24-h urinary phosphorus excretion in CKD patients stage 3-4 compared to 24-h urinary phosphorus excretion on an habitual dietary intake.

Study 1:

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the New Nordic Diet (NND), based mainly on

local, organic and less processed food and large amounts of fruit, vegetables, wholegrain and fish, versus an Average Danish Diet (ADD) would reduce the phosphorus load due to less phosphorus-containing food additives, animal protein and more plant-based proteins.

Study 2:

The aim of this study was to estimate the daily dietary phosphorus and protein intake compared to recommendations in 20 CKD patients and to evaluate the reproducibility of the 24-hour urinary phosphorus excretion.

Study 3:

The aim of this study was to investigate if 7 days dietary intake of Renal New Nordic Diet reduces the 24-hour urinary phosphorus excretion.
