The research of the Protein Turnover research group focuses at three levels of muscle physiology:

  1. regulation of protein turnover rates;
  2. fluctuations in the underlying kinetics –protein synthesis and degradation rates; and
  3. changes in skeletal muscle mass, strength and function.

The scientific mission of the Protein Turnover research group is to understand how skeletal muscle protein mass is responding to applied interventions and to contribute with evidence to formulate strategies for protein intake and/or muscular training for humans with the need to recover muscle mass.

Main research areas

The primary interventions applied are hyperaminoacidemia and muscular contractions. The approach is to investigate how amino acids (or alike components) and/or muscular contractile activity are 1) sensed and affect intramuscular signaling, 2) affect muscle protein turnover rates, and 3) lead to changes in protein mass.

Current research

Human in vivo designs are the preferred experimental model. Randomized controlled trial experiments are conducted in applied settings to combine mechanistic and explorative methodologies linking acute mechanistic responses to longitudinal phenotypic changes. When advantageous for the research questions also animal models are used.
