Main research areas

  • My scientific focus area is to measure and optimise lung function for cardiac surgical patients by developing new perfusion techniques and predictive biomarkers for lung injury.
  • During my PhD I conducted the Pulmonary Protection Trial reporting that additional perfusion of the pulmonary circuit with oxygenated blood during extracorporeal circulation improves patients’ postoperative oxygenation.
  • Co-developer of the “Electronic Patch” a wireless monitoring device measuring respiratory rate, pulse, and oxygen saturation.
  • Co-investigating for the PhD project "Evaluation of physician-staffed emergency helicopter”.
  • Reviewer for the Cochrane group: Anaesthesia, Critical and Emergency care.

Current research

The VERIFY-LUNG-INJURY project explores and validate metabolic biomarkers ability to identify patients at risk of developing lung injury with refractory hypoxaemia.

By means of applying metabonomics, the identified lung injury biomarkers are validated. The long term perspectives are to conduct studies which explore the external validity of these biomarkers’ ability to predict lung injury in intensive care patients and patients admitted to the emergency department with shortness of breath, and thereby reduce the morbidity and mortality rates.
