Diabetic angiopathy is central for late complications in diabetes. Microangiopathy is the key feature of diabetes specific late complications such as diabetic nephropathy, whereas macroangiopathy is less specific, but accelerated in diabetes. Approaches that identify early stages of micro- and macrovascular disease may potentially provide new horizons for risk stratification as well as for preventive measures and medical treatment. Recent advances in technology enable the non-invasive study of various aspects of the microcirculation and vascular pathology in general.
LIRAFLAME: A double blinded clinical trial including 100 patients with type 2 diabetes randomized to placebo or Liraglutide treatment for 6 months. The effect of Liraglutide on vascular inflammation will be assessed by FDG-PET/CT.
