Translational Type 2 diabetes research and fetal programming

Main research areas

My focus is on glucose, insulin and lipid metabolism in key organs involved in insulin resistance namely muscle, liver, adipose tissue and pancreas as well as on appetite regulation, energy metabolism, substrate oxidation and mitochondrial function associated with different metabolic conditions such as overfeeding, fasting and exercise.

My scientific expertise lies within the field of metabolism and integrative physiology with an extensive focus on the physiologic and molecular mechanisms underlying the etiology and pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes in relatives of type 2 diabetic patients but primarily in individuals exposed to intrauterine over- (gestational diabetes) and under-nutrition (low birth weight).
