Expertises
Ophthalmology; Intra-ocular surgery (cataract and vitreo-retinal surgery); Virtual-reality simulation; Assessment of technical skills; Acquisition of surgical skills; Robotic surgery; Validity trials; Clinical trials; Outcomes research; Delphi studies; Medical education; Research methodology.
Main research areas
Identifying best practices in training and assessment of complex technical skills within simulation-based environments, primarily in microsurgery, in addition to research in robotic surgery.
Current research
Ann Sofia Skou Thomsen conducts research in four related domains: i) how best to assess trainees competence; ii) how to optimize skills acquisition using technology-enhanced training modalities such as simulation; iii) examining factors that influences skill transfer between different environments and different procedures; and iiii) exploring comparative effectiveness of robotic surgery.
