Organisation profile

Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is a public hospital in the Capital Region of Denmark, established as a public private partnership with The Novo Nordisk Foundation.
The objective of Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen is to offer world-class treatment and contribute to a better life quality and health equality of people with diabetes, their relatives and citizens at risk. The Hospital was founded in 1932 by Dr. H.C. Hagedorn and Nobel prize awardee August Krogh.

At Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, we treat more than 11,0000 people with diabetes, hereby the largest diabetes hospital in Scandinavia. Of these, almost 1,000 are children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. This makes Steno Northern Europe's largest pediatric diabetes clinic. Steno has over 500 employees, divided between researchers and health care professionals. Research is performed in areas such as structural prevention, diabetes complications, precision medicine, diabetes stigma and health care technology.

Steno’s research ambition is to take the lead in translational diabetes research with focus on early disease and prevention. By translational we mean;

  • Translate new knowledge on disease physiology into improved prevention and treatment of patients.
  • Translate scientific advances into actual implementation in real-life settings and systems of care.
  • Translate knowledge on human and social change into clinical practice and real-life settings such as the family home, the workplace, the school and local communities.
