Abstract

Danish studies have documented a high prevalence of inadequate dietary intake and nutritional status among home care clients and nursing home residents. Underweight and weight loss can increase the vulnerability of the elderly to adverse health outcomes. Therefore, the ideal BMI among old residents and clients seems to be higher than among younger people. Nutritional intervention has a rather limited effect on the functional ability of debilitated elderly people. Little is known about the ability of the meal service to meet the nutritional needs of older consumers. Hence, in general there is a need for more research in this area.
