Abstract
Ultrasound is a valid and reliable imaging tool for evaluation of joint and tendon inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This chapter reviews how to use the probe and optimize the settings of the machine to obtain optimal images for the evaluation of synovitis. Synovitis in joints and tendons is usually scored semiquantitatively for both grayscale synovitis and power Doppler activity, and use of an atlas for ultrasound scoring has proven excellent reliability. Several validated scoring systems are reviewed.
