Abstract
Background
Diabetic foot disease (DFD) significantly affects individuals not only physically but also psychologically and emotionally. Despite growing recognition of these psychosocial impacts, there is limited clarity on how existing research has explored these dimensions within this population. This study builds on a scoping review that aimed to describe and map the psychological and emotional aspects of diabetic foot disease.
Aim
This scoping review secondary analysis aims to explore the psychological and emotional dimensions of people living with diabetic foot disease.
Methods
The scoping review identified 118 eligible studies. 94 studies were quantitative, 2 were mixed methods, and 22 were qualitative. A secondary thematic analysis was conducted focusing specifically on psychological and emotional themes reported in the included qualitative and mixed-methods studies.
Results
The analysis identified six overarching themes: i) emotional distress and psychological burden, ii) social isolation and restricted living, iii) identity disruption and self-perception, iv) coping strategies, v) loss of control and uncertainty about the future, vi) psychosocial barriers and facilitators to care. These themes depict the complex psychological dimensions of living with DFD, where emotional distress, social disconnection, and uncertainty shape individuals’ experiences and influence the engagement with care. These insights help identify areas where targeted psychosocial interventions could enhance care delivery and wellbeing.
Conclusion
Qualitative evidence highlights the psychological and emotional challenges faced by people with DFD. These findings emphasize the need for further research to better understand their psychosocial needs and to develop tailored psychosocial support interventions.
