Abstract
To properly treat patients in palliative care, symptom identification and assessment is mandatory. Although this is difficult due to the frailty of patients, several studies show that systematic assessment of symptoms is feasible in palliative care. We discuss which questionnaires to recommend for research in palliative care and examine the level of symptom recognition by health care professionals. Symptomatology and the course of symptoms over time are examined. Systematic symptom assessment using well-validated instruments is recommended to optimize palliative care.
