SCHISTOSOMIASIS

Pascal Magnussen, Birgitte Jyding Vennervald, Jens Aagaard-hansen

Abstract

Schistosomiasis is the second most important parasitic infection after malaria in terms of public health impact. Poor access to safe water combined with lack of adequate and appropriate sanitation keep transmission at a high level in many endemic areas. Climate change has a direct impact on the distribution and incidence. Transmission is complex due to the intricate interaction between biological, environmental, and sociocultural factors; and control measures should therefore adapt to local conditions rather than applying simplistic, universal strategies.
