N2 - The paper describes three models of peer support in the mental health services, and reviews the quantitative literature based on published reviews in the period of 1999–2015, especially the reviews from 2011 to 2015. The results are summarized in three conclusions: Peer support (a) has the same effect as interventions carried out by professionals, (b) sometimes has a greater effect on certain outcomes, especially on the recipient’s sense of hope and self-experienced recovery, (c) does not lead to an enhanced effect on clinical outcomes, e.g. symptoms. The paper outlines the perspectives for future research.
