Abstract

This case report describes the diagnosis of ADHD in a 29-year-old woman suffering from psychiatric and metabolic conditions and type 2 diabetes, receiving treatment for severe PTSD. She developed excessive daytime sleepiness, which, due to diagnostic overshadowing, initially was attributed to her psychiatric illness, delaying diagnosis and treatment. This jeopardized her daily life due to incidents of sudden sleep attacks and much longer sleeping times. The diagnosis of narcolepsy type 2 was given based on polysomnography, multiple sleep latency tests, and examination of the cerebrospinal fluid. Treatment with methylphenidate was successful in reducing her excessive daytime sleepiness and, to some extent, her excessive need to sleep.
