Abstract
This chapter explores the ways in which practicing intensivists understand and speak about the leadership roles they bear. Leadership is often a negotiated role that must account for relevant expertise, knowledge of the particular patient, and the needs of trainees. Leadership also extends beyond bedside responsibilities and encompasses the care and well-being of the entire care team. As most intensivists learn to lead during resuscitations, engaging in these wider roles effectively requires an ongoing process of growth and personal development.
