Is retirement beneficial for mental and cardiovascular health?

Kasper Olesen

Abstract

The purpose of the PhD project was to investigate whether age-related retirement is beneficial for mental health and the risk of heart disease. The project was based on interconnected data from Danish national registers.

Among 617,511 three-year-old Danes who were followed for up to 8 years, retirement turned out to give an increased risk of heart thrombosis (myocardial infarction) of 11% compared to comparable working participants.

The incidence of hospitalization due to depression and the purchase of antidepressant drugs was studied among 245,082 Danes who retired during the period 2000-2006. The extent of hospital treatment for depression and the purchase of antidepressant drugs increased with retirement without falling back to baseline. Analyzes of selected groups based on job group and demographic factors did not give rise to changed conclusions.

Thus, the overall hypothesis of the project that withdrawal is beneficial to health could not be confirmed.
