Abstract
More than 100,000 heart transplants have been performed worldwide since 1967. Surgical and medical procedures have improved and median survial in many centres including those participating in Scandiatransplant now exceed 13 years. The article reviews current indications and contraindications for cardiac transplantation and highlights improvements in donor selection, organ preservation, surgical techniques, immunosuppression, and rejection surveillance.
