Abstract
The homologous gut hormones, gastrin and cholecystokinin (CCK), are present in the vagus. CCK is transported distally in sensory fibers from the nodose ganglion. The origin of gastrin is less certain, obscuring the interrelationship between vagal CCK and gastrin. In view of the regulation of digestion by hormonal gastrin and CCK on the one hand, and the vagus on the other, the discovery of vagal gastrin/CCK-peptides has raised some fundamental questions, which are considered in this review.
