Effects on male reproductive function of phthalates and other environmental xenobiotics in humans: PhD thesis

Ina Olmer Specht

Abstract

The purpose of the PhD study was to investigate known and possible biomarkers for male reproductive function in an environmental context.

The study is a cross-sectional study of 938 pregnant women and 602 spouses from Greenland, Poland and Ukraine, collected from 2002 to 2004. Men and women gave blood samples and were interviewed, and the men gave a semen sample. Xenobiotics were measured in serum (phthalates, PFAS and HCB).

A clear relationship between phthalates and testosterone was observed, although the antiandrogenic effect of DEHP was not strong enough to result in a longer period of pregnancy. Our data do not indicate serious reproductive toxicity of PFAS or HCB. Apoptotic markers may not be suitable as new biomarkers for reproductive function in men.
