Abstract

Deaths from advanced chronic liver disease have increased significantly across Europe, with most affected patients not receiving a liver transplant. Despite this increasing burden, inequities in the provision of palliative care persist. Many patients are referred to specialist palliative care only in the final days or weeks of life and may continue to undergo futile invasive procedures. Drawing on the best available evidence, this position paper offers guidance to clinicians on the provision of palliative care to patients with advanced chronic liver disease, with the aim of improving the quality of life of this vulnerable cohort.
