Considerable progress has been made regarding symptomatic treatment of diabetic neuropathy. Apart from causal treatment (optimising metabolic control) a number of treatment modalities are now available for symptomatic diabetic neuropathy. The principles of symptomatic treatment depend very much upon which area of innervation is primarily affected. The optimal treatment of symptomatic diabetic neuropathy often requires the intervention of several clinical and paraclinical subspecialties.
