Abuse and trafficking among female migrants and refugees

Marianne Carisius Kastrup

Abstract

The chapter provides a brief overview of the size of the female refugee and migrant population and describes the various reasons lying behind the decisions to leave the country of origin in relation to gender. The premigratory factors that may contribute to mental and physical health problems are discussed as well as postmigratory factors that further add to psychological and physical distress and contribute to social problems. The vast – and increasing – public health problem of physical and mental abuse of refugee and migrant women and in particular the problem of trafficking are analyzed in relation to the causative factors but also to possible therapeutic interventions. Strategies are outlined focusing on how to empower these populations to be better able to cope with their lives. Further, it is discussed what actions should be taken by governments and NGOs to reduce this global problem.
