Intro: Although the psychiatric literature suggests that infection with Borrelia burgdorferi leads to psychiatric disorders and suicidal behaviors, the published studies have significant methodologic limitations.
Metoder: To examine risk among children and adults, we use the entire Danish population, captured in their national registries. The risk of mental disorders and suicidal behaviors among inpatients and outpatients after hospital contact for diagnosed Lyme Disease will be estimated using a nationwide cohort born between 1977 and 2016. Further work will be conducted in subsequent studies using nationwide prescription data. A study will also be performed using laboratory test positivity for Lyme disease (blood, joint fluid, and CSF) to examine the risk of mental disorders and suicidal behaviors among inpatients and outpatients. Data will be analyzed in a cohort study using survival analysis adjusted for important confounders.
Resultater (forventede): Several papers determining whether there is an increased risk of psychiatric disorders overall, and specifically depression and suicidal behaviors, after Lyme disease.
Diskussion/impact (forventet): The studies represents the first nationwide epidemiologic investigation of the psychiatric effects of Lyme disease and, as such, will have a wide impact on the medical and psychiatric community.
