Description of the project:
Schizophrenia affects many domains of brain structure and function. These factors also affect the course of the disease and antipsychotic treatment. In this study 3 key aspects in the development and treatment of schizophrenia are addressed:
1. Does the ‘schizophrenia risk gene’ ZNF804A, affect brain structure and function?
2. Can magnetic resonance (MR) brain scans be used to predict medication dosage and side effects
(e.g. weight gain) in the individual patient?
3. Can antipsychotic medication (quetiapine) normalize white matter tracts in schizophrenia patients?

The data to address these 3 questions has already been acquired (Cohort B). We expect that the application of several different methodologies (in advanced multimodal analysis) will enhance understanding of the in-terplay between genes, brain structure and patients' cognitive functioning. Knowledge from these studies will help to pave the way for development of more specific treatment strategies against schizophrenia.
