Intro: Little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms of the neuropsychiatric disorders schizophrenia and depression – yet the disorders have major impact on patients’ lives and huge societal costs. Previous research has suggested that cells of the immune system are involved in the pathogenesis of some individuals with the disorders. However, particularly studies of the immune system of the brain with analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid (the material closes to the brain that is easily accessible) are lacking, and the immune cell infiltration to the brain in these disorder, has never been extensively investigated.
Metoder: Single cell sequencing of the CSF using the 10x Genomics system, in addition to evaluate the immune cell function.
Resultater (forventede): Identification of immune cells that are differentially found in patients suffering from schizophrenia od depression compared to healthy controls. Hereby gaining novel information of the functionality and alterations in the immune system in or close to the brain that may impact om disease development.
Diskussion/impact (forventet): Novel insight to the immune systems potential involvement in schizophrenia or depression will pave the way for the understanding of the mechanisms underlying these major psychiatric disorders, hopefully followed by the individually targeted and much better treatment than today
