Pertussis remains endemic and poorly controlled in many countries including Denmark, despite high vaccine coverage rates in infancy and early childhood. Infants are at highest risk of severe disease and death. The medical management of pertussis cases is primarily supportive, although antibiotics may be of some value. Erythromycin has until recently been the drug of choice. However, newer macrolides such as clarithromycin and azithromycin are now available. Revised treatment and postexposure prophylaxis recommendations may be considered. The aim of this systematic review is to study the benefits and risks of antibiotic treatment and contact prophylaxis against pertussis.
