Acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) is the most common cause of illness among young children. A substantial part of respiratory tract infections are associated with viruses and although rarely fatal in industrialized countries, they are a source of significant morbidity and carry a considerable economic burden. Incidence rates of respiratory infections seem to be similar among infants in developed and developing countries with five to nine episodes during the first year of life. The aim of the study is to obtain reliable data on incidence and prevalence of respiratory symptoms and overall morbidity in a population-based birth cohort of healthy infants followed up to 1 year of age and to explore possible determinants for respiratory disease.
