"Mechanical function and structure of connective tissues from nano- to macroscopic scales, with particular focus on tendons.
"Connective tissues are found everywhere in the body and provide mechanical strength to the different organs. The main component of connective tissue is the protein collagen, and an important contributor to the mechanical function of this protein is covalent intermolecular bonds called cross-links. We have developed equipment for assessing the mechanical function of collagen from human tissue at the nanoscale, and we are currently investigating the functional implications of different types of cross-links. Changes to cross-linking are involved in connective tissue dysfunction with age and disease.
