Primære forskningsområder

Our brain experiences pictures and sounds as a whole complex entity irrespective of whether  they are currently perceived by our sensory systems or are recalled from memory. Different properties of stimuli we see are encoded and processed in distinct areas of our brain. Coherent representations theoretically arise with rhythmic synchronisation of neural discharges in the gamma frequency band (40-100 Hz). Recently it has been postulated that these high frequency rhythms are responsible for perception, cognition and memory. Because different people observe and perceive the surrounding individually we postulate that phase synchronisation of the gamma frequency band reflect these individualities. The first purpose of our study is to detect individual alterations of high frequency EEG signals in normal ageing. Our further goal is to  provide evidence that during cognitive decline and during acute alterations of consciousness like in delirium the brain is no longer capable of synchronise its perceptive networks on such high frequencies, and this lack of synchronisation is the cause of altered cognition.

Aktuel forskning

We have to major research interest;

First we test a cohort of patients who previously suffered from sepsis, septic encephalopathy and try to find the cause of altered perception, altered cognition and depression.

On the otherr hand we are testing subjects of different age groups and looking for changes in their perceptive networks.
