Specialist in Respiratory Medicine; Clinical researcher; translational scientist.
Obstructive airways disease; asthma; COPD; inflammation; pathophysiology
My research interests revolve around the diagnosis and phenotyping of asthma, with a focus on airway pathophysiology and inflammation. Hence, my Ph.D. thesis from 2006 described the usefulness of bronchial provocation testing with mannitol for assessing inflammation driven airway hyperresponsiveness. The mannitol test is now widely used as a diagnostic test for asthma in the clinical setting.
During my post doc with Prof Peter Gibsons group and Prof Greg King in Australia in 2010-11, I described the relationships between airway pathophysiology and subtypes of airway inflammation in older adults with asthma. These findings have added to our understanding of older asthma patients; an overlooked and often undertreated group of asthma patients.
Current research projects include studies on severe asthma: Prevalence, disease mechanisms, phenotypes immunology, novel treatments. Furthermore COPD: Immunological phenotypes and prognosis
A key aim of my research is to address key clinical problems in translational research studies, in order to provide better solutions to the management of the most severely ill patients with obstructive airways disease.
