Tourette syndrome

Primære forskningsområder

Tourette syndrome; Obsessive compulsive disorder; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Aktuel forskning

At the Pediatric Department at Herlev University Hospital we have established a research group for Tourette Syndrome (TS) with national and international partners to examine the aetiology and clinic course of TS. The longitudinal study has several arms including a clinical-epidemiological, a neuropsychological, genetics and a radiological study.

The objective of the project is to unravel the underlying disease pathology in TS through an interdisciplinary approach combining comprehensive clinical examination of families, neuroimaging techniques, and high technological molecular genetic studies. The overall project is expected to 1) elucidate the clinical occurrence of comorbidity disorders as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD); 2) to find predictors that enable us to predict the course and outcome of TS; 3) to clarify the quality of life, education and possible abuse in adolescents with TS; 4) to give a better understanding of the brain regions involved in TS; 5) to develop better and more comprehensive treatment methods and strategies. Better understanding and treatment/handling of TS/OCD/ADHD has no doubt important psychological and social aspects for the patients with these devastating disorders, their families, and other social surroundings, including the education system.
