Expertise

Álvaro is an infectious diseases physician trained in Brazil. He has performed clinical research in many tropical regions, including Vietnam, Ethiopia and the Amazon Rainforest and concluded a MSc in Tropical and Infectious Diseases at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in 2011. The topic of his dissertation was pyomyositis, a common disease among indigenous peoples living in the Amazon Rain Forest. Since November 2011, initially as a clinical research associate and eventually as a PhD student at Rigshospitalet, he has worked on a research agenda focusing on the relationship between activated coagulation and inflammatory pathways and the risk of adverse clinical events in the setting of HIV infection. The papers included in his PhD thesis (defended in Sep 2015) have characterized factors associated with circulating biomarker levels and demonstrated a link between enhanced inflammation and coagulation and the risk of anaemia and cancer. He has subsequently broadened his research platform to investigate the non-infectious complications of BK virus infection among transplant recipients.
