Aims and objectives

The Parker Institute strives, through research with focus on the musculoskeletal system and its disorders, to improve the status of health in the population via prevention at all levels, increasing knowledge of disease mechanisms and diagnostics, and by creating evidence-based treatments.

Focus areas

The Institute engages in prevention at all levels. Several epidemiological studies search for importance of dietary factors, prenatal and in childhood, for development of disease. As examples of secondary prevention, the Institute has the coordinator role in the EU-sponsored project, Nohow, to help people maintain a weight loss, and along similar lines, the LOSEIT project seeks to maintain and further develop weight loss in patients osteoarthritis.

The Institute has an interest in literature based studies. Among the interventions, which have been subjected to a systematic review, are weight loss, exercise, and various other non-pharmacological treatments of mainly osteoarthritis.

The Institute has a long tradition for patient involvement in research. In this connection, the Institute is coordinator in yet another EU-sponsored project, the ELECTOR, which aims at providing patients with arthritis with instruments for home-based monitoring.

The Institute runs a number of studies to develop and refine the use of imaging in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal diseases. Thus, Dynamic MRI-studies on post-contrast images are part of the strategy to clarify the importance of inflammation in various tissues in the joint in the degenerative processes and generation of pain.
