Aims and objectives

The overall ultimate aim of the research effort in the department of neurology is to improve prognosis and quality of life for patients with neurological diseases. Research objectives consequently include from improving the understanding of disease processes to testing of interventions.

"

Focus areas

The Department of Neurology has three main research focus areas:

Stroke, movement disorders and brain research based on stereo logical and molecular biology approaches organized as separate groups under different leadership.

The Stroke Research group focuses on responding to clinical needs or questions aiming to implement research results directly into clinical practice.

The Movement Disorders Research group is focused on Parkinsonian conditions in an interaction between advanced imaging and clinical intervention.

The Research Laboratory for Stereo logy and Neuroscience consists of a neurostereology unit, a molecular biology unit and the Bispebjerg Hospital Brain Bank. The laboratory embraces a broad range of expertise within the research of brain structure and function. In close collaboration with the Movement Disorders Research group the laboratory focuses in the understanding of movement disorders disease etiology and identification of biomarkers with clinical validity in a bench to bed approach.

Disciplines, methods and tools

The research in the department of neurology covers all the way from preclinical, human postmortem, brain imaging and clinical studies. The methodology applied includes stereo logical-based quantification of brain structures, identification of disease-related biochemical and genetic markers by molecular biology, in close collaboration with the DRCMR the investigation of disease-related regional brain activation patterns by advanced functional MRI, as well as clinical observational and interventional studies.
