Aims and objectives

Herlev-Gentofte Hospital (HGH) is part of the Copenhagen University Hospital collaboration that includes major hospitals in the Copenhagen area. HGH is the major trauma and elective hospital for the northern part of Copenhagen.

Orthopaedics is located at two sites: Herlev and Gentofte covering the following subspecialties:

Herlev: shoulder/elbow, foot/ankle, orthopaedic infections (not arthroplasty), traumatology

Gentofte: knee arthroplasty/reconstruktion, hip arthroplasty/reconstruction, sports traumatology, hand/wrist

There is an annual total number of out-patient appointments of around 70,000. The total number of hip/knee arthroplasty procedures expect to reach 2,500 in 2017.

Focus areas

Research at the department has a clear clinical focus on improving outcomes of orthopaedic procedures. There is currently a number of randomised controlled trials comparing implants and surgical techniques.

Other studies focus on patient-reported outcomes and their use for indications, patient guidance/empowerment and routine follow-up. Yet another group of studies are register studies taking their offset in national registers.
