Aims and objectives

Clinical pharmacology is a medical discipline, which, on a scientific basis, combines pharmacological and clinical expertise with the ultimate goal of improving efficacy and safety in the clinical use of drugs.

Clinical pharmacology is the scientific discipline that involves all aspects of the relationship between drugs and human beings. The main aim of clinical pharmacology in the health care system is to promote the rational, safe and economic use of drugs.

Focus areas

The Department of Clinical Pharmacology has a broad range of different focus areas including advisory support to clinicians regarding all drug related questions (i.e. Medicin Info, Giftlinjen, Bivirkningsmanager).

The department has prioritised research areas including pharmacoepidemiology using nationwide registers, adverse drug reactions, drug poisonings, pharmacology in children, oxidative stress, pharmacogenetics, personalised medicine and problems related to patients going from one healthcare sector to another.

Disciplines, methods and tools

The Department of Clinical Pharmacology works primarily on the basis of scientific methodology regardless of the focus area. The advisory support given is based on scientific evidence obtained by search in well-established data bases (i.e. PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase). A substantial amount of time is used for communication, either orally or written, and teaching (pre-graduate as well as post-graduate).
