Our aim is to improve the health in the general population.
We produce new knowledge on biological pathways relevant for the health. Thereby, we contribute to the knowledge necessary for providing better risk prediction/screening, more precise diagnoses, better prediction of therapeutic effects, and more detailed monitoring of treatment effects.
Our focus areas:
Cardiovascular diseases: dyslipoproteinaemia, hypercholesterolemia, atrial fibrillation, stroke, hypertension.
Neoplastic diseases: breast, prostate, haematological, lung cancer, and melanoma.
Lung diseases: asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
Other diseases: haemachromatosis, inflammatory bowel disease, psychiatric diseases, etc.
"
We use classical clinical biochemistry, genetic epidemiology, and evaluate new biomarkers.
The main material are very large samples from the general population, ie. the
Copenhagen City Heart Study (n=20,000), initiated 1976 and the Copenhagen Gene
ral Population Study. This a single-center study with >100,000 participants who have answered questions of lifestyle and health, have been examined physically, have had measured > 70 parameters from the blood, and from whom DNA has been isolated.
We also use patient cohorts with ischaemic heart disease (n>10,000), breast (n>9,000), prostate (n>3,000), lung (n>1000) cancer, melanoma (n>3,000), and others.
In Denmark, national registers record hospital diagnoses, cancer diagnoses, causes and date of death, use of prescription medicine and more demographic information like family information, income, education, etc. this information is 100% accurate for practical purposes.
We receive this yearly on all participants.
This material constitutes the basis for our studies of many aspects of human health and disease.
