It's about life - the research strategy at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital

At Amager and Hvidovre Hospital we are experts in the diseases that most people suffer from, and 80 percent of our patients have been acutely admitted to the hospital.

The hospital's researchers are working to understand the mechanisms that are important for a disease course, both before, during and after the patient is treated at the hospital. Therefore, the clinical research at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital is about the entire life of children, adults and the elderly. From conception to death.

The research is one of the hospital's pillars. It develops the academic environments, ensures continuous improvement of the quality of the treatment, and creates shared knowledge across institutions, departments, and professional groups. With strong clinical research, the hospital can attract and retain skilled employees.

Amager and Hvidovre Hospital are widely recognized for optimizing patient pathways in a number of areas, and the experience and results achieved through the research must be disseminated and developed even more. We will, therefore, strengthen our research in the coming years. This must be done with special focus on 3 areas:

Research for the benefit of the many suffering from chronic disorders

We want the research to benefit the many who suffer from one or more chronic diseases. These are disorders that can have a major impact on the quality of life of a person over many years, perhaps throughout their lives. Factors such as heredity, tobacco consumption, inactivity, nutrition, alcohol consumption, overweight, and social conditions are of great importance for how diseases develop.

The research at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital not only focuses on the actual treatment in the hospital but also addresses factors before, during and after contact with the health service.

We thus research the risk factors for developing a chronic common disease, the early detection of disease, precision diagnostics, image diagnosis, the control and treatment of chronic diseases, and special efforts for vulnerable groups. In addition, we have a focus on one of the areas that is predicted to be of great importance in the future, namely treatment adapted to the individual patient (precision medicine).

Research in acute patient care

Eight out of ten of our patients are admitted acutely, and in the coming years, we will research how the acute patient pathways can be made even better - both organizationally and in relation to healthcare.

A special focus is on interdisciplinary cooperation, as a key to a successful emergency course. Including patients and relatives is also an important area. The researchers try to identify how we can create better transitions for the patients, from department to department, and from the hospital bed to the home.

Research and innovation close to the clinic

The strength of research at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital is the close interaction with the clinic. The research is based on the patients' lives and health. In the coming years, we will work even more to ensure that the research knowledge is translated into improvements for the patients. We must analyse how we organize ourselves in the hospital to achieve the best possible results, and develop new, innovative treatment courses to improve the patients' lives and quality of life.
